Microblading VS. Powder BROWS VS. NANO BROWS

Blonde powder brow before and after.
Microblading after.
Comparison of powder brow and microblading on blonde clients.
Combo brow is microblading shown in the front of the eyebrow and shading at the tail end.

What is a Powder Brow?

Powder brow is a shading technique done using a tattoo machine with a tiny acupuncture needle to deposit pigment into the skin.

Pigments are chosen to match the natural or desired brow colour and skin tone will also be taken into consideration.

The result is a natural-looking, pixel effect that adds density and soft definition to the brows. When done on the right person, a powder brow can actually look more natural than microblading.

Results last 1-3 years before a touch up is required.

What is Microblading?

Microblading is a cosmetic procedure performed using a hand tool with ultra-fine needles and each individual ‘hair’ is gently etched into the skin, giving an incredibly natural and realistic look.

Microblading typically lasts 1-3 years, depending on skin type and skincare routine. Annual touch ups are recommended.

Microblading can correct or fully reconstruct lost eyebrows and is excellent for those with little to no brows, over-plucked brows, those wanting to enhance their brows, correct symmetry, or those who have just had enough of filling in their brows with makeup every morning!

Our goal with all brow services is to create extremely natural and realistic brows that do not look "done" nor penciled in. Think of the type of brows you would want to wake up on a Sunday morning with! Clients can always add makeup on top for special occasions if they want a more dramatic look.

NOTE: Most people are not great candidates for microblading and since the long term healed results are unpredictable, we stopped offering it.  Check  out  Powder  Brows  and  Nano  Brows  instead.

What are Nano brows?

If you want the  hair-like look of microblading without the pain, nano brows are  for you!

Nano brows, short for "nanoblading" or "nano-eyebrows," are a form of semi-permanent makeup technique used to enhance and shape the eyebrows. It is a newer, more refined, less traumatic version of microblading.

Nano brows involve the use of a fine, single-needle device to deposit pigments into the upper layers of the skin in a precise and controlled manner, creating realistic hair-like strokes.

The term "nano" in nano brows refers to the size of the needle used, which is extremely fine and allows for greater precision compared to the microblading technique. Nano brows are often favored for their ability to create very natural-looking eyebrow enhancements, and the results can last for about 1 to 2 years, depending on individual factors and aftercare.

This technique is ideal for clients with alopecia or very minimal hair wanting to create the illusion of a textured brow. It can also be used to fill in sparse or thin eyebrows, improve their eyebrow shape, or create a more defined and symmetrical look.

Which technique is best for my brows?

"Which technique you get is not up to you, it is up to your skin." - Lara

Our goal for you is that you LOVE your brows LONG TERM. Good, long term, healed results, come from choosing an experienced  artist who can analyze skin and know how each technique will heal in it. I, Lara, pride myself on HEALED results because healed results are the real results. It's easy to give you nice brows that look good for a few weeks. The real challenge, and what is actually important, is giving you brows that look good for many years.

Through my years of experience, it is clear to me that my style of soft, natural, powder brows heal beautifully in everyone, but microblading only looks good on very specific skin types (about 10% of people).

Therefore, all appointments will be booked as a powder brow. If at your appointment, your artist deems that you are a good candidate for microbladed strokes or nano brows, we will give you the option to add it.

IMPORTANT PRE CARE

Please read carefully before booking an appointment.

Permanent makeup takes  4-6 weeks for full healing. Therefore, ensure that you book your procedure with all special events/vacations in mind.

PREPARE FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT:

  • Hair: Clean, freshly washed hair is recommended as you should avoid wetting the brows in the first week.

  • Makeup: No foundation on the forehead please. Brow makeup is fine if you would like us to see how you usually draw them. Your photo will be taken so feel free to wear other make  up such as waterproof mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow (not above the crease), and/or concealer if you'd like.

  • Clothing: We  recommend  dark  clothing  in  the  event  that  the  pigment  accidentally  splashes.

  • Exercise:  Do not exercise up to 2-3 hours prior.

  • Alcohol:  Refrain from drinking alcohol 24 hours prior to your appointment.

  • Pain  Killers:  Avoid taking Aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Aleve, or similar products 24-48 hours before your appointment  (unless  prescribed). Tylenol is ok.

  • Blood Thinners: (e.g.  omega  3s  and  fish  oils)  should  be  stopped  5  days  prior  as  they  will increase bleeding during the procedure. If blood is coming out, pigment can not go in and therefore, your healed results will be jeopardized. If they are prescribed, do not discontinue. Speak to your doctor.

  • Botox: Must  be  fully  kicked  in  by  the  time  of  your  appointment  (full 2 weeks)

  • Sun  Exposure:  Skin  cannot  be  tanned  (or  burned)  so  book  for  at  least  2  weeks  post -vacations  to  hot  climates  when  scheduling  your  appointment.

  • Vaccines:  Avoid  vaccines  2  weeks  before  your  procedure

  • Anti-Aging  Products:  Avoid  retinol  or  glycolic  acids,  or  any  products  that  cause  the  skin to  be  sensitive,  for  2  weeks  prior

  • Tinting:  Stop  brow  tinting  2  weeks  prior  (it  is  important  that  we  see  the  natural  color  of  the  brow  hair to  accurately  color  match)

  • Hair  Removal:  Avoid  tweezing  or  waxing  for  2  weeks  prior  (feel  free  to  remove  any  hairs  that  are  more  than  2  inches  from  the  brow)

  • 30  days  prior  avoid  abrasive  treatments  like  peels,  acids,  and  lasers  on  or  around  the  treatment  area  and  discontinue  hair  growth  serums

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR BROW APPOINTMENT

Day 1 - 5: Brows will appear darker, thicker, and possibly warm (reddish) in colour. They appear darker because the scabs begin to form. It is important not to pick the scabs as this will result in lost pigment.

Day 5 - 9: As the scabs start falling off, brows may appear patchy, flaky, and feel itchy. Do not pick the scabs! Doing so will remove pigment!

Day 9 - 12: The brows may look light or milky. This is because a new layer of skin is growing over top to protect the area while it finishes healing. This is completely normal and the color will come back as this layer of skin sheds.

Day 12 - 21: The pigment will reappear and the brows will darken. The final healed result will be seen around the 2-3 week mark.

Any strokes or pigment that did not "re-appear" will be added back at the touch up appointment 6 weeks later.

At the touch up appointment, we can make the brows darker, fill in any missing gaps, or go slightly thicker but an entirely new brow shape will be considered a full appointment.

comparison of powder brows before, after, and healed. Can see that they heal more cool and lighter.

The warmth in the colour is only temporary and as the brows heal they will look cooler and softer.

Aftercare for microblading, powder brows, and nano brows

Day 1-2: You will be given cotton pads pre-soaked in a disinfectant to cleanse the area at specific times.

Day 3+: Apply the supplied aftercare balm 1-2x per day until all the scabs are off and the skin feels normal again.

First 7 days:

  • No water on the brows. Water or moisture will cause the scabs to come off prematurely and you will lose pigment. Wash your face with a cloth or wipes and lean your hair back into a bath or shower when washing.
  • Absolutely no sweating. Sweat contains saline which is a removal agent.
  • No cream/makeup. Remember, your skin is open, and anything that gets in can cause an infection. Wait until the skin is closed to begin using products again.

Day 8: You can start washing your face and hair normally again.

First 2 weeks: No massages, facials, saunas, steaming, swimming (head under).

First 3 weeks: No direct hot sun / sun tanning (the sun will cause pigment to grey or turn grey).

First month: Refrain from tanning, chemical peels, lasers, etc, (anything harsh on the skin).

It is imperative that you wear  SPF 40+ on your brows when outside to keep them looking fresh for longer and prevent color fading/changing.

FAQ

Please email info@larajadebeauty.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Basically any treatment, medication, or illness that compromises the immune system, and therefore the healing process, would make you NOT eligible for permanent makeup.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding (must wait 6 months after you stop nursing)
  • History of keloids or hypertrophic scarring
  • Diabetic (require doctor clearance)
  • Taking blood thinning medication (unless it can be paused 5 days prior)
  • Autoimmune disorder (would require doctor clearance)
  • Recently completed chemotherapy (require doctor clearance)
  • Hepatitis B/C
  • Currently sick with cold/flu/viral infection (rest and reschedule please!)
  • Epileptic (require doctor clearance)
  • Have a pacemaker (require doctor clearance)
  • Have uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • You are currently tanned, sunburned or have a skin rash (postpone until it is gone)

Please consult with us if any of the following apply to you before booking:

  • There is psoriasis/dermatitis, eczema, keratosis pilaris, chronic acne, broken capillaries or rosacea (mild cases can be okay) or other skin irritations on and around the brow area
  • You have previous microblading or permanent makeup (send us a photo)
  • You have a heart condition (consult with your doctor as the numbing contains epinerphine)
  • You have taken/used Accutane in the last year
  • You use products with retinoid/retinol/AHA. It is advised that clients are off retinol and retinoid (any derivative of vitamin A) 1-4 months before and after treatment, depending how strong it is. This includes Isotretinoin, Tazorac, Differin... etc.   Some exceptions can be made, so message me about specific concerns or add them to your medical forms when booking an appointment.

Both techniques involve depositing pigment into the skin (therefore, a tattoo), however the way they are deposited, and the aesthetic result, is different. A powder brow is done with a small machine that creates pixelation. Microblading is done with a manual tool to create lines resembling hair strokes. Both can look extremely natural when done on the correct skin type. Microblading is suitable for people with dry, taught, skin with no visible capillaries. Whereas powder brows can be done on every skin type (thick, oily, mature, etc.) Generally, I highly recommend a powder brow to everyone for the best long term results as it is less traumatic on the skin, heals easier, and looks better for longer.

It can be found under "IMPORTANT PRE CARE" and should be read prior to booking an appointment to ensure everything can be followed.

Please scroll down and read below "What to expect after my appointment".

Since the pigment is not implanted into the skin as deeply as traditional tattoos, the area will naturally fade overtime but will likely never completely disappear. It is still a tattoo. Permanent makeup typically lasts 1-3 years, depending on skin type  and age. Skincare routine will also affect the lasting effect of the pigment. Those who use products with AHA or Glycolic Acid with experience accelerated fading as your skin is regenerating faster. Each individual’s color retention within the skin will vary. To maintain the brows looking fresh, a touch up is suggested every 12-18 months. Clients with oily skin may require more frequent touch ups (as early as 6-8 months post).

Surprisingly, no! It feels like scratching for a few minutes, then a topical anesthetic is applied and it’s so painless you may even fall asleep. Most people report the tweezing is worse than the actual tattooing - who would have thought?!

Numbing gel is not initially used because it changes the texture of the skin.   Imagine you are asked to draw a straight line on a cardboard box. One box is dry and the other has been soaking in water for 30 minutes. Which box would have the nicer line?

Each procedure will vary. Typically expect an appointment to last about 1-2 hours. First, we will meticulously map, measure and shape your brows into a beautiful shape based on your facial features and the golden ratio. Next, the color will be selected. Only once the client approves of both will the procedure begin. Treatment is done using sterile and disposable pigments with the highest standards in the PMU industry. Each treatment has two sessions, the initial session and the touch-up appointment 4-8 weeks later.  The length of time for the touch up appointment ranges from 15 min to 1 hour depending on what needs to be done.

IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUS PERMANENT MAKEUP OR MICROBLADING WE NEED TO SEE IT TO DETERMINE IF WE CAN  WORK OVER IT OR NOT. Send a photo to info@larajadebeauty.com or (647) 905 6300. Please note that even if you have had microblading in the past, your appointment with me is considered (and charged as) an initial appointment, not a touch up appointment. These appointments are more difficult and require more work.

While this is a new vaccine and there is still a lot we do not yet know, there have been reports of customers experiencing anaphylaxis when getting permanent makeup (PMU) procedures. Therefore, if you have received the COVID-19 vaccine, you should wait to get any PMU for at least 15 days after. This is to prevent the chance of any reactions developing. Please notify us if you have received the vaccine or have a date booked.

In most cases, no. Everything is discussed via phone or email prior to booking. An in-person consultation is done during your initial brow appointment. However, if you have had previous microblading or permanent makeup, skin issues, scar tissues, or medical issues requiring discussion, a separate consultation may be needed. Please contact me directly with any questions.  If you would like to come in on a separate day prior to your appointment for me to roughly draw the shape and discuss any other concerns, there is a $50 charge which will be applied to the procedure.

Skin must not be damaged in any way (e.g. sunburn, eczema, dermatitis, acne in the eyebrow area). If any of these concerns arise, please contact me to reschedule.

Do not book an appointment before a vacation or anytime you will be getting wet, sweating excessively, or in the sun. You cannot get your brows wet for 1 week after and cannot swim for 2 weeks after. You can not wear makeup for 7 days post procedure so please consider the timing of upcoming events when choosing a date. Specifically eyeshadow, foundation and powder (anything that can get into the brows and cause an infection).

Women experience more sensitivity to pain during their period, so avoid that time too!

If you have a question that was not answered above, or want to discuss your particular case, send us an email or a text and we will get back to you as soon as possible!
